The future of campus: Balancing physical and virtual spaces in building an inclusive academic community
Abstract
This research explores the changing landscape of higher education, where the classical university-based learning is gradually converging with online learning environments. It investigates how a convergent approach to learning can be used to develop a more inclusive, responsible, and ethically sound learning environment. The discussion includes the growing adoption of modern learning technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and metaverse platforms, with a special emphasis on the implications such technologies pose to modern learning practices. This manuscript employing integrative review of conducting a literature review, the findings are synthesized from research literature, policy literature, and theoretical literature with a focus on dimensions specified by the Capability Approach, and technology ethics. The findings from the literature revealed that there are potential strengths of hybrid learning environments, and immersive learning environments, which include increased flexibility, increased accessibility, and increased engagement, although numerous problems remain, including inequality, potential for disconnection, the problem of data privacy, bias, and academic integrity. Findings also indicate that technological development is not a one-size-fits-all solution when ensuring inclusive learning environments. For inclusive learning environments, proper pedagogical strategy, readiness, and development of frameworks that are grounded in ethics, such as equity, transparency, and student support within physical, and online learning environments are required. This manuscript brings together diverse perspectives from multiple disciplines, contributing to the existing debate on the impact of digitalization on higher education institutions, outlining a path for future research on enhancing equity in learning with a focus on a blended learning environment.
