Abstract

To cope with the capacity gap caused by the construction of the Three Gorges new waterway project, a research on the countermeasures for transshipment during the construction period is carried out. We started with the transshipment infrastructure, analyzed its adaptability, and calculated the transshipment costs and critical points for different cargo types and routes. The study shows that there is still a certain gap between the current overall capacity of the transshipment system and the transshipment demand during construction. When the waiting time for commercial vehicle-carrying ships, container ships, and bulk cargo ships increase to 16 days, 22 days, and 25 days respectively, the cost of ships queuing to pass the dam exceeds the transportation cost of turning over the dam, using route1 to transshipment is more economical and time-efficient.
