Understanding Driver Information Needs in Trivandrum City: A Multinomial Logit Approach to Advanced Traveler Information System Design
Abstract
This study explores the preferences of private drivers in Trivandrum city for Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS), a key component of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The research focuses on identifying the types of information and preferred delivery platforms that influence travel behavior and decision-making. A structured questionnaire survey was conducted to understand the demand for both pre-trip and en-route information and to analyze the factors affecting these preferences. The findings indicate a strong interest in ATIS, with mobile-based platforms such as cellular phones and web services emerging as the dominant sources for pre-trip planning, while Variable Message Signs (VMS) are favored for en-route updates. Travelers place high importance on information related to traffic conditions, incidents, and alternate routes. The study highlights the potential of ATIS to enhance travel efficiency, improve safety, and reduce congestion in urban areas.
