Abstract

In recent years, the application of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in language education has become increasingly widespread. Whether this new technology can empowerment Chinese as a second language (CSL) classrooms remains to be further investigated. This study explores the impact of GenAI assisted writing instruction on the improvement of writing ability of CSL learners. The results indicate that compared to traditional writing teaching, GenAI assisted writing instruction has a significant improvement on writing performance. The study also found that most students are able to accept and adapt to the application of GenAI to writing instruction. However, they are skeptical about the accuracy of AI-generated content, and agree that it could not completely replace the role of teachers in writing instruction. Therefore, we can regard GenAI as a pedagogically effective tool for enhancing L2 writing competence. And further research on the application of human-machine collaborative model is needed in the future.
