Optimization of Performance Grading Indicators and Testing Protocols for SBS-Modified Asphalt via ABQT
Abstract
Conventional asphalt quality testing methods are time-consuming and inefficient, failing to meet on-site quality monitoring demands. Using SBS-modified asphalt at five dosages, this study examined the correlations between the Asphalt Binder Quality Testing System (ABQT) and traditional performance graded (PG) as well as routine indices, aiming to develop a rapid quality control technique. Results show that ABQT outputs correlate well with those from dynamic shear rheometry (DSR), bending beam rheometry (BBR), penetration and softening-point tests. At 30 °C, the coefficient of determination (R2) is 0.99 between ABQT and DSR high-temperature critical temperatures, 0.91 between ABQT and BBR low-temperature critical temperatures, 0.99 between ABQT creep recovery rate and penetration, and 0.90 between ABQT creep recovery rate and softening point. Validation confirms that ABQT can serve as an advanced asphalt quality tool with the potential to replace conventional methods.
