Abstract

To investigate the combustion mode and heat release characteristics of supersonic jet combustion, a RANS simulation was conducted on the Hyshot II combustor. The following conclusions are drawn: (1) The jet position to the middle section of the combustor, and the near wall region are the heat release in this area can serve as a heat source. Vortex strength near the wall is relatively large, and a decrease in vorticity from the middle section to the exit of the combustor is conducive to flame stabilization. (2) Along the flow direction of the combustor, the volume proportion of the flow zone decreases, the volume of the combustion zone first increases and then decreases, while the mixing region increasing nearly linearly. (3) Four combustion modes are classified based on Mach number and flame index. The subsonic diffusion combustion region has the smallest volume but the highest heat release. Supersonic diffusion combustion occupies the largest proportion, and although supersonic flow is not conducive to chemical reactions, its large volume fraction contributes to heat release. The entire combustion chamber is dominated by supersonic flow, with heat release mainly from diffusion combustion.
