Abstract

With a focus on the perceptions and experiences of teachers and students regarding assessment methods in educational equality, this study explores the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in design education at a top art school in Shanghai. The research gathered data from structured questionnaires and subsequent semi-structured interviews conducted in a focus group setting. Research reveals that although students demonstrate favorable opinions towards GenAI for improving creativity and usability, obstacles such as variations in AI skill, financial constraints, and issues related to academic integrity remain prevalent. The research highlights the necessity for fair access to resources and varied assessment techniques that accurately represent students’ efforts. Recommendations encompass more explicit grading criteria, varied assessment methods, and professional development for educators. This project seeks to delineate optimal approaches for the effective integration of GenAI in design education, while fostering equity and enhancing the educational experience.
