DNA data exchange between EU member-states under the Prüm II regulation
Abstract
DNA profiling plays a critical part in identifying a person involved in a crime. It also sheds light on ties such as genetic relationships between distant populations, which could aid in criminal ancestry identification and cross-border crime resolution. The study has a regulatory framework governing the exchange of DNA between EU member-states under the Prüm II Regulation. Given that the regulation facilitates the exchange of DNA for law enforcement purposes, national law must ensure compliance. By comparing the legal framework on this issue, the study highlights the need for harmonization of databases for the efficient and secure exchange of DNA data in criminal investigations
