Abstract

Purpose: This community service program aims to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, Key Performance Indicators of higher education, Asta Cita, and the National Research Priority Agenda by reducing health risks caused by formalin consumption in food. The activity focuses on increasing public awareness and knowledge regarding formalin hazards, strengthening community capacity to identify and reduce formalin contamination, and promoting preventive actions through practical training. Ultimately, the program contributes to improving public health and supports the shared vision toward Golden Indonesia 2045. Design Methodology Approach: The program was implemented using a participatory empowerment approach involving members of the Family Welfare Empowerment organization as educators and community counselors. Activities included structured training on formalin hazards, practical demonstrations on removing formalin from salted fish, and the use of a web based formalin detection application. Program effectiveness was evaluated through pre test and post test assessments, interviews, and direct observations involving 17 participants. Findings: The evaluation results show a significant improvement in participant knowledge and understanding. The average pre test score of 78 increased to an average post test score of 85 following the training. Participants demonstrated improved competence in identifying formalin contamination and applying appropriate mitigation techniques. Practical Implications: The program provides practical guidance for reducing formalin content in salted fish through soaking in warm water at approximately forty degrees Celsius for fifteen minutes and utilizing a digital application for formalin detection. These practices can be adopted by the wider community to enhance food safety. Originality Value: This program integrates community empowerment with practical food safety education and digital monitoring tools, offering a preventive and replicable model for reducing formalin exposure and improving public health awareness.
