The Impact that Socioeconomical Factors Have in the English Learning Process: Guanajuato City
Abstract
This study explores the impact of socioeconomic factors on English language learning among students in Guanajuato, Mexico. Drawing on qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with students from both public and private schools, the research examines how elements such as parental education, access to educational resources, personal motivation, and language exposure influence learners’ perceptions and outcomes. Findings reveal that while access to books and technology is important, it is the consistent use, practical application, and support systems that ultimately determine the effectiveness of language learning. Students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds report greater confidence, fluency, and motivation, often due to increased exposure to English through travel, media, and supportive learning environments. In contrast, those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds face additional challenges not only in terms of material access but also in receiving guidance and practice opportunities. The study concludes that addressing these structural disparities is crucial for fostering equitable and effective language education.
