Abstract

The article discusses legal translators’ expertise and presents answers to closed questions from an online survey for experienced legal translators. The questionnaire was developed based on the characteristics of experts described in the literature in order to check whether potential experts observe changes in themselves that would be consistent with research results. In particular, the focus was on whether the results would confirm that expertise in one field does not transfer to other fields, while translation does not become easier as the translator gains experience, due to greater cognitive effort put into analysing problems or greater awareness of the risk of errors, among other things. The answers points to the adaptive nature of translators’ expertise. Respondents declare that they work faster than at the start of their careers, have fewer problems or doubts, and are willing to use tried and tested translation solutions, which is only partially consistent with the research results. At the same time, they indicate that the effort put into proofreading remains unchanged, which may indicate an awareness of the risk of errors and a sense of responsibility. The responses show considerable variation, which may suggest different working styles or different expertise development trajectories, depending on the affordances available. The results of this analysis will be supplemented with a qualitative analysis of the responses to open questions, which is presented in the next article.
