Abstract

Chronic childhood malnutrition (CCM) has been a serious problem in Ecuador for more than 25 years, and little is known about its progression by province. This research aimed to analyze the evolution of chronic childhood malnutrition in Carchi over the last 25 years. The study followed a quantitative methodology, utilizing various databases, with the analysis centered on the 2023 National Survey on Child Malnutrition (ENDI) and conducted through econometric regression models. The study found three main results for the province of Carchi: a) there is a decrease in chronic childhood malnutrition at a different rate than the national rate; b) the trend in chronic childhood malnutrition in the province varies according to age; and c) the determinants of childhood malnutrition in the province depend on age: 0 to 2 years, 3 to 5 years, and 0 to 5 years overall.
