Abstract

Value added tax is one of the most important forms of indirect taxation in modern tax systems and a basic instrument of fiscal policy in most countries around the world. The study analyzes the genesis and stages of development of VAT, and identifies the key characteristics of the modern national VAT model in Ukraine. It has been established that modern accounting software products provide for the implementation of various VAT accounting algorithms -from simplified models focused primarily on the formation of regulated tax reporting to advanced systems that provide for multidimensional analytics by type of business transaction, tax rates, structural units, counterparties, and areas of asset use.It has been proven that detailed VAT accounting in scientific and practical terms should be considered as a component of tax compliance and an element of the enterprise's tax risk management system. It has been established that the correct reflection of transactions on the electronic VAT account in accounting creates the conditions for increasing the reliability of tax calculations, reducing the likelihood of financial sanctions, and ensuring an adequate level of tax discipline among business entities. The paper visualizes the accounting support of incoming and outgoing VAT using the example of a separate business entity, which confirms the practical applicability of the proposed approaches.
