Abstract

This paper proposes an indicator-based framework for assessing the financial efficiency of wine enterprises operating in an unstable economic environment. The objective is to justify a coherent set of financial metrics for wineries and to clarify how key sources of instability translate into changes in these metrics.Financial efficiency is conceptualized as a multidimensional outcome that integrates profitability, liquidity, operating efficiency, and debt sustainability, reflecting the sector's high sensitivity to input-cost volatility, long production-to-sale timing, and irregular cash inflows.Methodologically, the study synthesizes academic approaches to financial diagnostics and applies descriptive, trend (dynamic), and comparative analysis to aggregated industry, macroeconomic, and trade information in order to characterize the external environment of wine businesses and systematize relevant risk factors. The measurement toolkit combines profitability indicators (Return on Sales, ROS; Return on Assets, ROA; Return on Equity, ROE), liquidity indicators (Current Ratio; Quick Ratio), activity indicators (Inventory Turnover; Cash Conversion Cycle, CCC), and debt sustainability indicators (Debt Service Coverage Ratio, DSCR; Interest Coverage Ratio; Debt-to-Equity).A core contribution is a structured mapping of major risks cost inflation, energy price volatility, exchangerate fluctuations, logistics constraints, seasonality, prolonged production and ageing/storage cycles, working-capital pressures driven by inventories and receivables, climate variability, and shifts in market conditions to the dominant mechanisms through which they affect financial outcomes (cost escalation, delayed cash recovery, and demand/price volatility).Based on these mechanisms, the paper formulates practical adaptation directions tailored to wineries: strengthened procurement and cost management (with emphasis on packaging, energy, and logistics components), disciplined pricing aligned with product segments and sales channels, accelerated cash recovery through inventory and receivables control, synchronization of outgoing payments with expected inflows to prevent short-term cash gaps, and diversification of sales markets and distribution channels to reduce concentration risk. The paper concludes that profitability, liquidity, and turnover indicators provide the earliest signals of financial stress under instability, while debt metrics capture the limits of resilience.Future research is proposed to empirically test the framework using five-year financial statements of Ukrainian wine producers and to quantify external-factor effects with correlation, regression, or panel-data models.
