Abstract
The article provides a theoretical analysis of financial stress as a psychological determinant of individual economic behavior under conditions of socio-economic instability. The study systematizes contemporary approaches to the interpretation of financial stress within the framework of economic psychology and differentiates it from related constructs, including financial anxiety, financial distress, and subjective financial well-being.Financial stress is conceptualized as a multidimensional psychological state arising from the perceived imbalance between financial demands and available personal resources, mediated by cognitive appraisal and emotional regulation processes. The paper examines the structure of economic behavior and identifies its principal forms, namely saving, consumption, investment, and borrowing behavior.Particular attention is given to the cognitive, emotional, and motivational determinants that shape financial decision-making.It is argued that financial stress functions as an integrative psychological mechanism that transforms risk perception, narrows time perspective, increases sensitivity to potential losses, and reduces the capacity for long-term financial planning.Through these mechanisms, financial stress influences both adaptive and maladaptive economic strategies. The analysis further demonstrates that socio-economic instability acts as a contextual moderator intensifying both the experience of financial stress and its behavioral consequences. In unstable economic environments characterized by income volatility, labor market uncertainty, inflationary pressures, and reduced institutional trust, financial stress tends to acquire a prolonged and systemic character. As a result, individuals may shift from strategic resource management to short-term survival-oriented behavior, alter their investment preferences, or modify saving patterns. The theoretical contribution of the article consists in clarifying the conceptual boundaries of financial stress within economic psychology and substantiating its role as an independent determinant of economic behavior rather than merely a byproduct of adverse financial circumstances. The proposed conceptual framework integrates cognitive, emotional, and contextual dimensions of financial stress, thereby providing a coherent analytical model for understanding behavioral responses to economic instability. The findings create a foundation for future empirical research aimed at testing the identified mechanisms and refining psychological interventions designed to enhance financial resilience at the individual level.
