Abstract

Luis Alfredo Martínez was a committed liberal who published his first and only novel, A la Costa, in 1904 in defense of Alfaro’s reforms. This study aims to describe the protagonist’s ideological change through his discourse. A critical approach was used to analyze the novel’s role within the socio-cultural sphere of its time. The findings revealed an initial conservative phase, a second phase with an anarchist essence and finally a third phase crossed almost entirely by a liberal discourse. It is concluded that the protagonist’s ideological change reflects the sociopolitical transition of Ecuadorian people at the time.
