GRAPHIC FORM AS A MARKER OF GRAMMATICAL AND SEMANTIC DISTINCTIONS IN JAPANESE VERBS AND VERB FORMS
Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of grammaticalization in the Japanese language.Frequently used verbs and verb forms were selected and analyzed as the primary examples, on the basis of which a classification of verbs was developed and presented according to their grammatical function.Accordingly, verbs are distinguished as "main" / "lexical" ("independent") verbs and "auxiliary" verbs.Within each category, the specific features of how a verb functions as either "independent" or "auxiliary" were identified, which in turn made it possible to subdivide each category into further subcategories. It was established that the criterion for distinguishing between these categories in written form is the method of writing: namely, hieroglyphic writing is used to denote "independent" verbs, while hiragana writing is used to denote "auxiliary" verbs.Within the category of auxiliary verbs, a subset was identified that can also perform an affixal function, effectively functioning as affix-like formants. All the examples analyzed in the article illustrate how the same verb manifests itself both as an independent verb and as an auxiliary verb.Particular attention is paid to the transformations that may occur in the core (lexical) meaning of a verb when it shifts into an auxiliary function. Each example demonstrates specific features of the verb in its auxiliary usage, which made it possible to examine the phenomenon of grammaticalization of Japanese verbs and verb forms in a comprehensive manner and to systematize the results of the analysis in the form of a classification.Special attention is given to the imperative verb form 「下さい」/ 「ください」, in whose usage an extralinguistic aspect may also be observed, related to how these forms are perceived depending on their method of writing. It was found that the perceptual features of the aforementioned forms are related to the etymology of the form 「下さい」.
