Abstract

I was born Juan Blas Rosales Sevilla1 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, in the early 90s.Looking at my family, you will quickly see that we are not the quintessential American family. My parents are White, I am Hispanic2, and my brother is Asian. From a very young age, I knew we were different-simply put-because a family like mine could not exist without some divine intervention at hand. And it is for that reason I have been stuck-for the better part of my life-living between two worlds.Between the world I was born in and the family I was adopted into.As a kid, I remember seeing people's glances from afar whenever we would go out. They would stare at our mosaic of faces-like an exhibit in a museum-and ponder, What happened there? Before immediately looking away to avoid being noticed.Still, some, however, would have the gall to come up and ask. After hearing our tale, they would smile and say, "What a beautiful story, " or would note how "blessed" we all were, or would even share the lovely stories of the adopted people they knew to try to relate to what it feels like to be Coco: Brown on the Outside, White on the Inside -A Meditation on My Transcultural Adoption to American Parents
