Abstract

This research identifies driving forces behind voluntary sustainability initiatives (VSIs) in the North American dimension stone industry and considers potential outcomes as they advance. The approach involves a thorough review of a focal dimension stone standard, ANSI/373, an analysis of forest certification to compare with stone, and communication with contacts in the field. The certification of dimension stone is following similar patterns as forestry, suggesting comparable outcomes in the stone industry. However, several challenges need to be considered such as inconsistencies among firms posing obstacles to certification pursuit, the rigorous certification process itself demanding significant effort, skepticism regarding the credibility of certifications, and consumers not yet prepared to base materials selections on accreditations. Fundamentally, industry stakeholders want to emphasize that dimension stone is a practical, environmentally considerate material option. This point is embedded in the framework of emerging dimension stone standards to convey its viability while prioritizing environmental matters.
