Abstract

This is a short newsletter contribution extending a 2025 CCA/CAG Conference presentation. I discuss two distinct approaches to using Generative AI tools in cartography: (1) as a “research assistant” for for data analysis, visualization, interpretation, and writing; (2) as a research tool to develop and improve mapping techniques, e.g. cartographic symbol design or label placement on maps. While emphasizing the need to assess GenAI outputs and other side effects, I contend that the humanized interface of GenAI enables a broadly accessible advance in scholarly research quantity and quality.
