Abstract

Reality rarely offers such immediate and complete examples of theory confirmation than the very recent Fulton County election records event in the United States. Few acts on the part of the current U.S. Administration offer such complete verification of Tainter’s diminishing returns on complexity and Turchin’s theory of elite overproduction or James' theory of the asshole, and Cipolla’s' ideas on stupidity as reasons for the end of civilisations throughout history. The work of these four scholars are linked together into a single previous RShare submission titled The triumph of stupidity and the ascent of the asshole: How civilisations always end and why. The current paper uses the recent Fulton County elections records event as an example such a verification, and of the anatomy of an inadvertently stage managed societal collapse. Modern civilizational decay is best understood through the convergence of Joseph Tainter's theory of diminishing returns on complexity and Peter Turchin’s elite overproduction concept, which together describe a system that is both too expensive to maintain and too fractured to govern. This structural failure creates a vacuum filled by Aaron James’s Assholopaths, leaders who feel systematically entitled to ignore the rules of the civilizational scaffolding supporting complex societies while immunizing themselves against the moral complaints of the public. These assholopath actors thrive by weaponizing what Carlo Cipolla calls "stupid group," a demographic that, through irrational action, inflicts net losses on the entire social fabric without any coherent gain for themselves. As demonstrated by the illegal February 2026 Fulton County seizure of elections records by agencies of the United States federal government, we are witnessing a penultimate stage of this civilisational decay process: a logic vortex in which the institutional execution of power (seizing evidence) has been entirely decoupled from the authorship of values (established legal due process and reality), signaling not just a political shift, but a physiological reflex of a civilization simplifying itself toward inevitable collapse. And, as of early February 2026, the theoretical risk of "authoritarian simplification" has crossed into physical reality. This update applies the theoretical framework of The Triumph of Stupidity and the Ascent of the Asshole to this federal seizure of U.S. election records. It argues that this event is not merely a reenactment of an already legally resolved political dispute but a definitive civilizational marker where an entrenched institutional elite has successfully decoupled its reality from the existing epistemic scaffolding.
