Ruotsi ja Suomi toimijoina suhteessa Natoon: lingvistisiä huomioita
Abstract
Sweden and Finland as actors in relation to NATO In this article, I examine applying version analysis the relationship between three news articles published by the Russian state-owned news agency TASS. I focus on demonstrating how TASS constructs Sweden and Finland as actors in their decision to apply for NATO membership and in their previous development of neutrality, and also on investigating how the timing of news publication affects representation. The separate news on Sweden and Finland were published before the official NATO application process started, but the compilation article on both countries was published afterwards. I study word choices, structures, and processes, applying text and discourse analysis, and systemic-functional linguistics. Sweden is represented straightforward, deceptive, and active, while Finland’s agency appears passive, complicated, and personalised. The timing also affects the construction of agency of both countries presented by TASS. After the NATO decision, both countries appear straightforward and their roles seem more complicated as Turkey´s opposition is apparent.
