Abstract

Sturgeons (Acipenseridae) are valuable species from the Triassic period, but various anthropogenic activities have decimated wild populations. The ship sturgeon Acipenser nudiventris is one member of this family, and unfortunately, its populations are close to extinction and require comprehensive support. Currently, catches of this fish in the Caspian Sea, the most important natural habitat, have reached their lowest numbers. Efforts to re-establish the stocks are also not providing sufficient protection for the ship sturgeon, and governments and organizations should make serious efforts to prevent the extinction of this valuable species.
