Restoring maternal mental health through individualized homoeopathic intervention: A case report of postpartum depression
Abstract
Postpartum depression is a disorder that is often unrecognized and undertreated. Many psychosocial stressors may have an impact on the development of postpartum depression. A syndrome associated with pregnancy or the puerperium (commencing within about 6 weeks after delivery) that involves significant mental and behavioral features, most commonly depressive symptoms. Case summary: A 27-year-old married woman visited the OPD with the complaints of low mood, irritability, feeling of hopelessness, loss of interest in daily activities, disturbed sleep, and reduced appetite following childbirth. At baseline, during the first clinical visit, after detailed case taking, clinically significant score on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was 28. An individualized homoeopathic treatment regimen was initiated with Ignatia 1M, followed by Ignatia 10M in subsequent follow-ups, along with supportive lifestyle modifications. The patient exhibited a steady and marked clinical improvement, with progressive resolution of depressive symptoms and a reduction of the EPDS score to 05. Patient’s health status markedly improved showing restoration of emotional stability, improved functional capacity, and successful adjustment.
