Mental rubrics as the basis for acute prescribing in homoeopathy: A case series assessed using the modified Naranjo criteria
Abstract
Background: In Homoeopathic practice, mental and emotional symptoms are often given primary importance in the management of chronic cases, where as their relevance in acute prescribing is frequently underestimated. The homoeopathic system of medicine requires physicians to examine a patient's mental condition together with all their physical symptoms to achieve optimal treatment results according to its foundational principles which are defined in Aphorism 213 of the sixth edition of Organon of Medicine. Case summary: The case series describes four acute medical conditions which required mental rubrics to determine suitable homeopathic treatments. The acute conditions discussed include acute bronchitis, tension headache, influenza in an infant, and an acute depressive state associated with hypotension. In each case, remedy selection was based on the construction of a complete symptom totality that incorporated prominent mental and emotional changes observed in the patient. The mental symptoms were transformed into proper rubrics which enabled precise remedy identification that resulted in fast positive treatment results. Conclusion: This case series identifies the clinical value of integrating mental symptoms and mind rubrics into acute prescribing. Recognition of emotional triggers and mental states along with the other symptoms makes the remedy selection more accurate further strengthening the holistic foundation of homoeopathic philosophy.
