Oral Submucous Fibrosis: A review with Unani perspective and modern correlation
Abstract
Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic, progressive, potentially malignant disorder of the oral cavity characterized by mucosal rigidity, trismus, and a burning sensation. While modern medicine attributes the etiology primarily to areca nut consumption, the Unani system views it as a result of humoral imbalance affecting oral tissues. This review aims to shed light on understanding Unani principles, exploring diagnostic criteria, etiopathogenesis, and treatment approaches in Unani systems and its modern correlation.
