Combating AMR: A futuristic battle and a race against time in the field of medicine: Narrative review
Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is now a leading issue, particularly in the field of treatment of diseases, both in human and animals. Excessive and rampant use of antibiotics, lastly in the previous two decades has led to the evolution of stronger strains of bacteria, viruses and protozoa, causing a significant and sharp rise in the number of cases of hospitalization and mortality. Moreover, noted research and publications have now successfully explained the spontaneous evolution, mutation of certain species of bacteria and the passing of resistance genes through horizontal gene transfer, which are definitely contributing to the incidences of AMR. Increase in the cases and episodes of AMR across the whole globe is surely going to jeopardize the complex balance between treatment and recovery from diseases. In this review a narrative highlighting and focus is on the generation of resistance in different microorganisms against a wide spectrum of antibiotics, the global scenario and rising trends of failure of antibiotic therapy, socio-economic aspects of treatment failure, current commitments to lessen the rise of antimicrobial failure and ways to prevent the happenings of AMR.
