A study on the rise, fall, and reinvention of smartphone brands in India: A comparative analysis of Indian and global players
Abstract
The Indian Smartphone market has undergone significant structural transformation marked by rapid technological change, intense competition, and frequent brand turnover. This study analyses the rise, decline, and reinvention of Smartphone brands in India through a comparative evaluation of Indian and global players. Using a secondary data-based research design, the study examines market evolution, consumer behavior, operating system dominance, competitive intensity, and policy interventions influencing brand sustainability. The findings indicate that the emergence of the Android ecosystem fundamentally reshaped industry dynamics, leading to the decline of proprietary platform-based brands such as Nokia and BlackBerry. Indian brands like Micromax and Karbonn experienced rapid growth during the value-driven expansion phase but failed to sustain competitiveness due to limited innovation capabilities and weak ecosystem integration. In contrast, brands such as Samsung, Apple, and Xiaomi sustained market relevance through strategic adaptability, portfolio diversification, ecosystem alignment, and cost leadership. The study concludes that long-term competitiveness in India’s smartphone market depends on ecosystem integration, technological agility, and strategic reinvention rather than early market leadership.
