Abstract

Indian markets are deeply influenced not only by economic forces but also by cultural traditions and ritual practices that have evolved over centuries. In India, consumption patterns are often guided by beliefs, customs, festivals, and religious values, making the marketplace a reflection of the country’s civilizational heritage. This paper explores how traditions and rituals play a significant role in shaping consumer demand, product preferences, seasonal trade cycles, and marketing strategies. Ritual-based consumption such as purchasing gold on Dhanteras, buying new clothes during Diwali, or offering specific food items during religious occasions demonstrates the close connection between cultural practices and commercial activity. The study highlights the relevance of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) in understanding market behavior, as traditional values like dharma, community welfare, and sustainability continue to influence economic decisions. The paper also discusses the transformation of ritual-driven markets in the modern era, where e-commerce and corporate branding increasingly incorporate cultural symbolism. The findings suggest that traditions and rituals remain powerful drivers of Indian market dynamics, offering unique opportunities for businesses, policymakers, and researchers to integrate cultural knowledge with contemporary economic practices.
