Abstract

Nowadays women work in all kinds of sectors alongside men. But gender bias remains a massive problem particularly in India, where cultural and societal norms stand in the way of women advancing their careers. The “glass ceiling” it refers to is an invisible barrier that women come up against which prevents them from reaching the top echelons of management, not because they lack the ability or expertise. The Problem: Woman considers these the common problems women face at Indian workplaces, from emotional, to social and professional intersections. In general, women in India don’t receive fair treatment for promotions, work roles and pay they find it difficult to advance in their jobs. Women are getting more leadership jobs, but the change is happening relatively slowly. This paper considers the meaning of the glass ceiling; how it affects career progression, and whether new laws are required to achieve equal opportunities.
