E - Governance Under Digital India: Transparency and Efficiency
Abstract
The Digital India program, launched on 1 July 2015 by the Government of India, aims to transform the country into a knowledge-driven, digitally empowered society and economy. This initiative seeks to improve governance, enhance public service delivery, and promote inclusive growth through technology. Key components include the development of nationwide broadband infrastructure, mobile connectivity in rural areas, IT training for youth, and promotion of electronics manufacturing. Mission Mode Projects and e-governance initiatives, such as MyGov.in, DigiLocker, UMANG, e-NAM, Aarogya Setu, and Direct Benefit Transfers, facilitate seamless access to government services, financial inclusion, healthcare, education, and social welfare. The program leverages cloud computing, mobility, analytics, and secure digital identities to integrate various departments and enable real-time citizen engagement. Digital India has significant socio-economic impacts, including increased GDP, improved labor productivity, enhanced financial and digital literacy, and greater accessibility to education and healthcare services, particularly in rural areas. Furthermore, the initiative contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing paper usage and carbon emissions. Overall, Digital India represents a transformative approach to governance and economic development, fostering transparency, accountability, and equitable access to resources, thereby positioning India as a digitally empowered and knowledge-based economy in the 21st century.
