Leadership theories and their role in enhancing people's participation in the contemporary politics
Abstract
This paper critically examines the evolution and contemporary relevance of leadership theories in enhancing public participation in governance. Existing academic knowledges has often treated leadership models independently of participatory governance, with limited integration of classical theories and contemporary democratic practices. Addressing this gap, the paper synthesizes trait, behavioral, contingency, transformational, servant, participative, and wise leadership models and analyzes their application in fostering citizen engagement. Case studies include India’s Mann Ki Baat, the Aam Aadmi Party’s participatory governance, European citizens’ panels, and youth-led climate activism. The analysis demonstrates that leadership style alone is insufficient but acts as a catalytic factor: participative and transformational approaches measurably expand engagement when combined with institutional design, digital platforms, and deliberative processes. By linking leadership theory with participatory practices, this study contributes a more integrated framework for understanding how leadership enhances democratic participation in the contemporary era.
