Abstract

The most significant problem with football players is knee injuries because of the specifics of the game, which puts a large mechanical load on this crucial joint because of sudden motions, physical contacts, and fast change of directions. The joint is anatomically complicated and consists of the intersection of the femur, tibia, and patella and is stabilized by a set of ligaments (including a cruciate ligament) and menisci which help to act as shock absorbers. Injuries are of different degrees, but the tear of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the most severe. It commonly occurs due to an ungrateful landing or a sharp turn, which leads to acute pain and instability of joints. Meniscus tears and tendonitis are also frequent, and they are the result of repetitive load and constant jumping. These injuries are caused due to a combination of both the physical factors, including the poor muscles around the knee and insufficient warm-up, and the external factors involving the poor playing surfaces or the use of improper footwear, as well as excessive physical activity that undermines the body by making it unable to withstand stress. Conservative treatment according to rest and physical therapy follows which is followed by surgery when there is complete tear of the muscle. Physical rehabilitation is perhaps the final step in the transition of the player back to the field, as exercising works on the strengthening of the thigh muscles and the increase of balance. Lastly, the prevention is always the fundament of the defense of the athletic career of a player; compliance with the organized programs of warming up and strengthening allows minimizing the threat of injury and providing the preservation of the technical and physical performance on the field.
