Abstract

Background of the Study: Modern competitive sports demand an integrated operation of muscular strength, cardiovascular endurance, and biochemical durability, yet athletes frequently face high levels of oxidative stress, muscle fatigue, and slow recovery. While traditional training focuses on specific physical domains, there is an increasing recognition that mental ability is a primary foundation for success, necessitating a shift toward holistic conditioning that unites the mind and body. Objective: The objective of the review is to evaluate the effects of yoga on the physical, physiological, psychological and performance parameters that determine athletic excellence. Method: Sources included from the electronic database Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scispace focusing on overall sports. Result: Results indicate that yoga significantly improves joint range of motion (ROM), specifically in the shoulders and hamstrings, and enhances static and dynamic balance. Physiological data show large decreases in serum cortisol, muscle injury markers, and lipid peroxidation, alongside improved VO2 max and heart rate variability (HRV). Psychologically, yoga increases mindfulness, focus, and emotional regulation while significantly reducing competitive anxiety and negative ruminations. Performance-specific gains include improved shooting accuracy, 5m sprint times, and cricket batting/bowling abilities. Conclusion: Yoga is a clinically significant, non-pharmacological intervention that augments biochemical recovery, prevents non-contact injuries, and facilitates a balanced competitive mental state. By bridging the gap between molecular diagnostics and functional athletic outcomes, it serves as an essential tool for optimizing long-term performance and athlete well-being.
