Orange: Application in food industry
Abstract
Orange (Citrus sinensis) is one of the most widely cultivated citrus fruits and plays a significant role in the global food industry due to its nutritional value, sensory appeal, and functional properties. Oranges are rich sources of vitamin C, dietary fiber, flavonoids, carotenoids, and natural antioxidants, making them valuable ingredients in health-oriented food products. In the food industry, oranges are extensively used in the production of juices, concentrates, nectars, jams, marmalades, candies, bakery items, dairy products, and beverages. Orange peel and by-products are increasingly utilized for the extraction of essential oils, pectin, dietary fiber, and bioactive compounds, promoting waste valorization and sustainability. Additionally, orange-derived compounds are employed as natural flavoring agents, preservatives, and color enhancers in processed foods. The versatility, functional benefits, and consumer acceptance of orange-based ingredients highlight their growing importance in food formulation, product development, and the advancement of nutraceutical and functional food sectors.
