Abstract

The current paper examines the theoretical significance of the study of the causes of hadith narration (Asbāb Wurūd al-Ḥadīth) and aims to determine a universal method of analysis of its advantages in the sciences of hadith. The study fills a major research gap created by the small amount of independent study of this field through classical and modern hadith, even though this is a crucial part of interpreting the text of Prophet and directing the juristic inference. According to the study, the knowledge of the reasons why the hadith was narrated is a methodological tool which relates the Prophetic text to its historical, social, and legislative contexts thus providing proper interpretation and application of legal decisions. Through an inductive approach, the study scientifically collects the benefits of primary sources of hadith, classical commentaries, and special literature in causes of narration. These benefits, then analyzed and theorized using an analytical approach, are then further classified and evaluated and come up with fourteen key methodological functions never before organized comprehensively in the literature of hadith. The paper suggests a tripartite theory in which such benefits are grouped as interpretive, inferential and analytical-preferential. The paper concludes that science of causes of hadith narration is not a auxiliary science, but it is one of the central methodological pillars to study the Sunnah in the balanced and scientifically sound way. It proposes the re-introduction of this field into curricula, stimulates more methodological research, and coming up with practical research that uses causes of narration as a means of solving jurisprudential challenges today. Finally, the study provides an organized system that enhances interpretive precision, justifies the law, and aids methodological change in the contemporary Islamic studies.
