An Empirical assessment of Tourist Destination challenges in selected Tourist Spots of Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu
Abstract
Tourism plays a vital role in the socio‑economic development of Tamil Nadu, contributing significantly to employment generation and regional growth. Despite its potential, tourists visiting hill stations often encounter several challenges that affect their overall experience. This study aims to identify, rank, and interpret the problems faced by tourists in selected destinations of Dindigul District, specifically tourist spots in Kodaikanal and Sirumalai. Primary data was collected from 186 respondents through structured interviews, supplemented by secondary sources such as books, journals, and websites. Using statistical tools including percentage analysis, mean, standard deviation, and ranking techniques, the study revealed that overpricing of products and services, lack of cleanliness and sanitation, and absence of drinking water facilities are the most critical issues. Other concerns include poor maintenance, inadequate accommodation, weak infrastructure, safety, overcrowding, lack of signage, stray animal attacks, and harassment by touts. The findings underscore the importance of affordability, hygiene, and basic amenities as fundamental expectations of tourists. The study concludes with practical suggestions for policymakers and destination managers to improve infrastructure, regulate pricing, enhance sanitation, and strengthen tourist information systems. By addressing these challenges, Dindigul’s hill stations can enhance visitor satisfaction and sustain their competitiveness in Tamil Nadu’s tourism landscape.
