Abstract

Women constitute a major share of the unorganized workforce in India, yet remain highly vulnerable to poverty, wage discrimination, and labour insecurity. This study investigates the socio-economic conditions of women workers in the unorganized sector with a specific focus on Tamil Nadu’s Karur District. Using a multi-stage sampling approach and statistical tools such as ANOVA and correlation analysis, the study identifies key determinants influencing women’s poverty risk and economic empowerment. Findings reveal that gendered labour practices—low wages, unpaid household responsibilities, discrimination, and limited access to productive assets—significantly hinder women’s financial independence and mobility. The results emphasize the need for gender-sensitive policies, improved labour protection, and enhanced access to welfare and credit facilities to strengthen the socio-economic position of women workers.
