Building resilience: Supporting children’s mental health in everyday life
Abstract
Childhood is a period of rapid emotional, cognitive, and social development, during which children cultivate coping skills and resilience that influence lifelong mental health. Positive experiences, supportive relationships, and safe environments help children navigate stress, regulate emotions, and develop problem-solving abilities. Conversely, exposure to chronic stress, neglect, or adverse experiences can hinder resilience and affect mental well-being. Nurturing mental health involves fostering secure attachments, promoting emotional literacy, encouraging adaptive coping strategies, and creating supportive environments within families, schools, and communities. By prioritizing resilience-building practices and early emotional support, caregivers, educators, and communities can equip children to manage challenges effectively and thrive throughout life.
