Abstract

Background of the study: Post prandial walking is a type of walking that has shown to achieve a good glycemic control among type 2 diabetes mellitus patient. Post prandial walking refers to, walking after a meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner) for 1km. This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of postprandial walking on glycemic excursion among adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Objectives To compare the glycemic excursion of diabetic patients with and without post prandial walking. To determine the association of glycemic excursion with selected baseline variables. Methods: The design adopted was experimental one group pretest posttest design, wherein 40 type 2 diabetic patients were selected using non – probability purposive sampling technique. A Proforma to obtain baseline variables was used. A calibrated glucometer was used to check the blood glucose values before and after each meal. Intervention included postprandial walking for 1km after each meal under the supervision of the investigator on day 2 of the study. Data collected was analyzed and interpreted using descriptive and inferential statistics. The conceptual framework for the present study was based on general system’s theory. Results: Findings revealed statistically significant reduction in the median scores of glycemic excursion for each meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner) after the intervention of postprandial walking for 1km ( p< 0.001).Study showed a significant association between BMI, where subjects with BMI > 25 kg/m2 showed better glycemic excursions(p
