Economic impact of apple cultivation on rural livelihoods: A case study of Narkanda block, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh
Abstract
Apple farming for rural livelihoods in Himalayan hill regions is still an important practice in India; however, growers face further challenges of production, market, and climatic factors. To study apple growers' socio-economic situation, production practices, technology utilization, marketing systems, and livelihood outcomes in a study area in Himachal Pradesh, the research was conducted. The study was based on primary data obtained from 150 apple-farming households in India based on a structured survey that was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Based on the results, it can be concluded that apple farming is predominantly owner-owned and largely rainfed, that moderate to large scale landholdings allow commercially viable production. It shows a high specialization and specialization level of apple varieties in the apple cultivation, the Royal Delicious being the most dominant variety along with increasing diversity of varieties. High Density Planting is moderate to high with moderate adoption, limited by financial and technical limits to wider uptake. Pest and disease incidence, climate variability, and rising cost of inputs represent major production obstacles. Marketing relies on regulated markets, limited cold storage use, and is price-volatile, despite its high membership to cooperatives. Apple cultivation is the base income of most households and has raised income, quality of life and social standing, although the returns are uneven. The study highlights the necessity for climate-resilient varieties, improved extension services, market infrastructure, and strong institutional support to foster the sustainability of apple-based livelihoods.
