Study of calcium carbonate and silica from Juhu beach and Girgaon Chowpatty Sand
Abstract
Sand beaches are dynamic coastal environments formed through the interaction of geological, marine, and biological processes. Their composition reflects the combined influence of sediment sources, wave energy, and biogenic activity. This study focuses on the compositional analysis of beach sands, emphasizing the mineralogical contributions of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and silica (SiO₂). Through field sampling, laboratory testing, and microscopic analysis, the research identifies the mineral proportions and discusses their environmental implications. The results indicate that silica and calcium are key indicators of beach origin, sediment transport, and ecological health, providing valuable insights for coastal management and conservation. From the experimental data it was observed that calcium content in the sand collected from Juhu beach is more than Girgaon Chowpatty sand, and Silica content is more in Girgaon Chowpatty sand.
