Socio-Economic Impact of Tourism Facilities: A Study of MTDC’s Role in Promoting Beach Tourism in the Kokan Region
Abstract
Tourism plays a significant role in advancing the socio-economic development of regional destinations, particularly in coastal areas where natural resources attract substantial tourist inflows. This study examines the socio-economic impact of tourism facilities provided by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) in promoting beach tourism in the Kokan region. The research analyzes the effectiveness, accessibility, and quality of MTDC’s facilities—including accommodation, transport connectivity, sanitation, safety measures, and hospitality services—and their contribution to enhancing tourist experiences. It further explores how improved tourism infrastructure stimulates local employment, encourages small-scale entrepreneurship, and supports community development. The study adopts a mixed-method approach, utilizing field observations, structured questionnaires, and secondary tourism data to assess tourist satisfaction and local stakeholder perceptions. Findings reveal that MTDC’s initiatives have positively influenced tourist arrivals and local income generation, but challenges remain in the areas of facility modernization, digital service integration, and sustainable environmental management. The paper concludes that strengthening MTDC’s infrastructural capabilities and leveraging technology-driven solutions can significantly enhance the socio-economic benefits of beach tourism in Kokan. Recommendations are provided to improve service quality, community participation, and long-term sustainability, thereby positioning the region as a competitive beach tourism destination in Maharashtra.
