Abstract

Background: Liver disorders, categorized under YakritVikara in Ayurveda, have emerged as a significant global health challenge, primarily driven by contemporary Mithya Ahara (incompatible diet) and Vihara (sedentary lifestyle). In Ayurvedic physiology, the Yakrit (liver) is the primary seat of Ranjaka Pitta and the Moola (root) of RaktavahaSrotas, making it central to metabolic transformation and hematopoiesis. Objective: This review aims to evaluate the synergistic efficacy of specific Yogasana and Ayurved Pathyahara (prescribed dietary regimens) in the management and reversal of hepatic pathologies such as Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), Jaundice (Kamala), and Hepatomegaly (Yakrit-Vikara). Methods: A comprehensive analysis of classical Ayurvedic texts was integrated with modern clinical observations regarding hepatic blood flow and metabolic markers. The review focuses on the mechanical impact of postures like Dhanurasana and Ardha Matsyendrasana alongside the biochemical role of Deepana-Pachana and Pitta-Shamaka diets. Results: The integration of Yoga and Pathya works on a dual-action mechanism: Yogasana enhances intra-abdominal pressure and insulin sensitivity, facilitating the "scraping" (Lekhana) of intrahepatic fat, while Pathyahara reduces the metabolic burden by preventing Ama formation. Evidence suggests that this combined protocol significantly normalizes liver enzymes (ALT/AST) and improves hepatic echogenicity. Conclusion: A structured lifestyle intervention based on Yoga and Ayurvedic dietetics offers a sustainable, non-invasive primary therapy for liver health. By strengthening the Dhatvagni and balancing Pitta, these practices ensure long-term hepatic wellness and prevent progression to chronic cirrhosis.
