Abstract

Objective: To compare the Anti-TPO antibody positive rate in patients presenting with menstrual irregularities with and without PCOS. Design: Case control study. Setting: Our study was performed in a medical hospital based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Population: Our study included two groups PCOS and non-PCOS women presenting with menstrual irregularity. Methods: A detailed history was obtained along with physical examination in all indicated patients of both the groups. Serum antithyroid peroxidase antibody was evaluated in both the groups. Main Outcome Measures: Prevalence and types of thyroid dysfunction; anti-TPO antibody positivity; and comparison of thyroid function tests and anti-TPO levels between PCOS and non-PCOS groups. Results: Mean anti-TPO levels were 110.24±252.13 IU/mL in PCOS and 48.91±148.33 IU/mL in non-PCOS women (p=0.189). Though, mean levels were higher in PCOS as compared to non-PCOS group yet this difference was not significant statistically. Anti-TPO positivity was observed in 15/40 (37.5%) women in Group I and 9/40 (22.5%) women in Group II (?²=2.143; p=0.143). Conclusion: Thyroid abnormalities and anti-TPO positivity were common in women presenting with menstrual irregularities, irrespective of PCOS status. Thyroid evaluation (including anti-TPO where appropriate) may be considered during assessment.
