Clinical evaluation of Swarnaprashana in childhood: A study on immunity, growth and cognitive development
Abstract
Swarnaprashana is a classical Ayurvedic pediatric immunomodulatory practice described in Kashyapa Samhita. It involves administration of processed gold (Swarna Bhasma) along with honey and ghee to enhance immunity (Vyadhikshamatva), intellect (Medha), digestion (Agni), and strength (Bala) in children. In the contemporary era, despite advancements in modern immunizations, children frequently suffer from recurrent respiratory infections, poor appetite, and developmental delays. Addressing this gap in pediatric healthcare, this study evaluates the clinical efficacy of Swarnaprashana on immunity, growth, appetite, and cognitive development in pediatric age groups. The study was conducted in the Department of Kaumarbhritya, Government Autonomous Ayurved Medical College, Jabalpur, from February 2014 to May 2015. A total of 400 children were registered, among whom 80 children received regular Swarnaprashana for a duration of one year and were included for detailed assessment. The formulation consisted of Swarna Bhasma (100 mg) processed with Ghrita (6 ml) and Madhu (6 ml), administered in age-appropriate drops once monthly on Pushya Nakshatra, on an empty stomach. Regular administration of Swarnaprashana significantly enhances immunity, growth parameters, and overall development in children. It may serve as a safe and effective Rasayana intervention in pediatric age groups and validating ancient wisdom in the context of modern pediatric healthcare.
