Siberian Regionality and Its Political and Cultural Significance
Abstract
The discourse on ethnonational identity, which has become popular in recent years against the backdrop of assessments of the course, results and prospects of globalization processes, makes it necessary to once again turn to the works of the ideologists of Siberian regionalism, or autonomism (1860s - 1920), who in the second half of the 19th century raised the question of the regional "specialness" of Siberia, the need for its own path of development, and the role of this region in all-Russian and world history. The main stages of the development and key issues of the ideology of regionalism are considered. It is shown which problems the regionalists considered requiring an immediate solution, and which they believed could be solved in the long term. A brief description of the views of the leading ideologists of regionalism is given. The specifics of the political and ideological position of regionalism during the formation of the party system in Russia and in the era of revolutions (1905-1907, 1917) are analyzed. It is concluded that regionalism was a local patriotic movement, which set it apart from other political parties, both all-Russian and national, and its activities were primarily educational and propaganda-oriented, which evoked understanding and sympathy among many representatives of Russia's progressive intelligentsia.
