Abstract

This chapter provides, first, a brief survey of major developments in the Byzantine-Muslim borderland from the seventh up to the twelfth centuries, and then a thorough and comprehensive overview of some key aspects of borderland studies from the Byzantine perspective, with a focus on concepts and methodological approaches that dominate the historiographical discourse. The chapter analyses how major historiographical works have shaped our understanding and perception of this frontier zone, what shortcomings and pitfalls we should be aware of, and what desiderata for future investigation there are.
