Rwanda and Burundi
Abstract
Christianity in Rwanda began in 1900 with Roman Catholic missionaries from Buganda, followed by German Protestant missionaries in 1907. Spiritual revivals, such as the Marian apparitions in Kibeho and the East African Revival within Protestant missions, have shaped the religious landscape. Despite the churches’ failure to prevent the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, recent initiatives promote repentance and reconciliation. Today, Christianity in both Rwanda and Burundi is experiencing rapid growth, especially through charismatic movements, while also recognizing the need for critical reflection on church-state relations and healing of past wounds.
