Uganda and South Sudan
Abstract
Christianity in Uganda and South Sudan shares historical roots through British colonial rule and common missionary institutions. In Uganda, Christianity has grown since the late 19th century, with various denominations comprising a majority of the population, although traditional religions persist. South Sudan’s Christian history is intertwined with Sudan’s, influenced by Arab-Islamic culture, and its traditional cultures have shown less openness to conversion. Encounters between Christianity, Islam, and traditional religions have led to both clashes and dialogue, with churches playing roles in social development, peace-building, and political life.
